February 10, DePaul-10 EIU-0

February 10 the EIU Hockey team traveled to DePaul to face their undefeated squad. EIU travelled with a shortened bench this weekend missing key players such as captain Brad Bartosz (Concussion), Ryan Newton (Back), Chris Gallagher (Broken Fibula), Jake Armijo (Lacerated Kidney), and Zach Yurchak. The game started off strong with EIU outshooting DePaul 18-15 in the first. However DePaul was leading this period 1-0. The second started off with a completley different tone. Depaul scored 7 unanswered goals leaving EIU with their heads down. "The boys just looked like they got slower in the second" said Coach Runnion. The chatter in the locker room after the second was that we could not give up reported Captain Brad Bartosz. The third went in the same manner as the second when DePaul notched on two more tallies leaving the game 10-0. Coach Runnion: DePaul has a great squad. We should have been more prepared. I am proud of some of the players on the team stepping up and working hard when we have so many injured players out. I commend their goalie for making some top-notch saves. The score doesn't reflect it but we had many great scoring opportunities that were turned down by him.

February 12, DePaul- 10 EIU- 1

Saturday marked a new day for EIU and a new shot at the undefeated DePaul team. At the end of last nights game Loren Jacobs was escorted off of the ice with an injured hip. Zach Yurchak returned to the lineup today and was soon to notch EIU's only goal of the weekend. To start the game Sam Guttasch was hit and resulted in tearing his ACL/MCL. This adds another top player to the EIU's long list of injuries from the current season. The first period started slower with DePaul tallying 3 to EIU's 0. The second period featured more DePaul scoring when they put up 4 more goals on Andrew Teske. The third brought a little life to the EIU bench when Zach Yurchak burned one past the DePaul netminder to gain EIU's only goal for the weekend. Although EIU did not have a successful weekend, their overall season was very successful. EIU rebuilt the structure of their organization during the season and re-built their team in a whole new way. Coach Runnion: "This weekend was a rough one for us but I am still very proud of the boys. We were able to not give up and continue to battle through the game and injuries. Next season marks a new chapter in EIU Hockey's book and will hopefully be a more successful one than this season."
