EIU Sweeps EKU
January 13, EIU-9 EKU-1
EIU started the 2012 year off right when achieving two wins against the EKU Colonels. EIU had already faced EKU twice during the season, however EKU had a much larger bench. The boys welcomed alumni Matt Litoborski on the bench for Fridays game and hoped to impress him with their new skill set. EIU started out slow and played a very sloppy first period of hockey. Assistant captain Connor Maly stated that its hard to get pumped and focused in games like these, especially when it is so quiet in between whistles. Eastern started off their scoring with 5:55 left in the first period when Connor Maly notched a powerplay goal from a beautiful pass from rookie defenseman Kyle Cark. Connor's found the net a second time and Jack McDonnell scored just after that making the end of the first 3-0 in EIU's favor. In between the first and second EIU really harped on being ready to play and putting forth a full effort. "We seemed very slow and unfocused in the first" said team captain Brad Bartosz. The second found some more scoring for EIU when Jack McDonnell, Kyle Clark, and Mike Sorrentino all scored (Assists by Armijo, Shannon(2), Sorrentino). The third started and EIU hoped to get their goaltender Andrew Teske his first shutout of the season. However, the team let up an even strength goal due to a mental error coming from a defenseman. EIU continued their scoring although and veteran forward Connor Maly tallied up a hattrick. The final score being EIU - 9 EKU - 1. Coach Runnion: The boys looked sloppy pretty much through the entire game and did not play to their best standard. The only thing we can do from this is take the win, move on, and prepare for tomorrow and next weekend.

EIU welcomed new player Ryan Newton to the lineup today and hoped that the team's performance would be sparked by this new addition. It did just that and EIU came out with a solid performance to start the game. Scoring 4 goals in the first period and one of them being shorthanded, the team new that the game was in their keeping. EIU focused their strategies on puck movement and defensive zone coverage in order to prepare for next weekends games agains Missouri University. Scoring 4 more goals in the second period, EIU's offense was on a bit of a scoring streak. In the third, EIU faced another fundamental defensive lapse and alllowed EKU to break Andrew Teske's shutout with a Powerplay goal. The final of the game was EIU - 10 EKU - 1. Coach Runnion: This game allowed us to practice alot of our different skill sets for the upcoming weekend. We are going to need alot stronger of an effort if we plan on beating Mizzou and the boys know that.
